LGBTQ Community

"When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." — Audre Lorde

Services for the LGBTQ Community

At Intentional Living, all services are available to LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) individuals and couples. Dr. Terracciano provides the LGBTQ community the following services:

While the USA has noticed gradual improvements in LGBT civil rights over the last several years, there is a long way to go. The effects of ongoing stigma, harassment, violence, prejudice and discrimination place people with gender and sexually expansive identities at greater risk for substance misuse and psychological distress. Even for those fortunate not to be significantly impacted by these forces, living in a hetero-normative world is enough to create tension and conflict.

For some, working with a gay-identified practitioner is important. As a gay-identified psychologist, Stephen Terracciano provides a safe and welcoming space where clients can be more fully understood. Whether you want to address concerns related to gender and sexual identity and expression, or have other concerns, Stephen's intention is to help clients harness all of their strengths and celebrate all of who they are.

LGBTQ Specific Concerns

Here are some of the LGBTQ specific concerns Dr. Terracciano addresses with clients:

  • The coming out process — across the lifespan
  • Shame related to sexual and gender identity or expression
  • Promoting sexual health while keeping sexually vibrant
  • Living with HIV & HIV prevention [ PEP and PrEP adherence ]
  • Relational intimacy
  • Impulsive, compulsive and out-of-control sexual behavior
  • Sexual desire, arousal and performance concerns
  • Substance misuse
  • Family planning and parenting considerations

Relevant Training & Experience

Stephen has been providing cognitive and behavioral psychotherapy (CBT) services to the LGBTQ community since completing his Doctorate in Clinical and School Psychology in 2000. Since embarking on developing his private practice in 2003, he has forged alliances and collaborative relationships with numerous medical, mental health, and social services organizations serving the NYC-metro LGBTQ community.

Dr. Terracciano coordinates services with complementary service providers as appropriate and refers clients to additional resources to support their needs. He is committed to continuing education and professional development to best serve the LGBTQ community. As a member of the LGBTQ Special Interest Group of the Association for the Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, he stays up-to-date on evidenced-based treatments and current research on the intersection between sexual/gender diversity and mental health.
